Lectures and tutorials

Create a searchable transcript of a recorded lesson while studying, without scrubbing through the whole video.

Meeting recordings

Keep a written record of the discussion so you can check what was said and write up your meeting notes.

Interviews and video podcasts

Get a transcript to work from when choosing quotes, drafting an article, or writing show notes.

Short videos

Transcribe your own clips, or ones you have permission to use, when revising a script or planning a follow-up.

Vlogs and screen recordings

Use a transcript of a spoken walkthrough as a draft for a written guide or a post to go with your video.

Livestream clips

Upload the part of a replay you need and read through the discussion at your own pace.

How it works

How to convert video to text online

Upload a video, generate a transcript, and save the text. It all works in your phone or computer’s browser, with no software to install.

  1. 01

    Upload your video

Select an MP4, MOV, or MKV video from your device, or drag it into the upload area. Your recording needs an audible speech track.

  2. 02

    Generate your transcript

Choose the spoken language or use auto-detect, then select “Start Transcribing” to generate your video transcript.

  3. 03

    Edit and download the text

Review the transcript alongside the audio and correct any mistakes. Copy the text or download a TXT file for your notes, documents, or articles.

Before you upload

How to get a more accurate video transcript

A clear recording makes video transcription more accurate. These quick checks can save you time when reviewing the text.

  • Check the audio

Play the video first. You need a readable audio track with speech you can hear clearly.

  • Keep background noise down

Loud music and background conversations can make words harder to recognize.

  • Split longer videos

The maximum supported video length is 60 minutes. Trim longer videos to the parts you need before uploading.

  • Double-check the details

Listen again to names, numbers, and technical terms before using them in your notes or quotes.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How can I convert video to text for free without signing up?

Upload your video above and select “Start Transcribing.” You can generate, edit, copy, and download a transcript without creating an account.

Can I convert MP4, MOV, and MKV files to text?

You can upload MP4, MOV, MKV, and other common video formats, up to 2 GB per file. The video needs a readable audio track. Some codecs may not be supported, even if the file extension is listed.

What are the file size and duration limits for video uploads?

You can transcribe videos up to 60 minutes each, with a maximum file size of 2GB. If your video exceeds these limits, trim it to the section you need or split it into smaller clips, then upload each clip separately.

Can I transcribe a video on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in your phone’s browser and choose a video from your photo library or files. You don’t need to install an app.

Can it read text on screen or extract existing subtitles?

No. NowText transcribes speech from the video’s audio track. It doesn’t use OCR to read text in the picture or extract subtitles already in the video.

How do I download my video transcript as a text file?

Open the completed transcript and choose the download option to save a plain text (.txt) file. You can also copy the text into Word, Google Docs, or your notes. Timestamps are available in the online editor; SRT subtitle export is not currently supported.

How accurate is AI video transcription?

Accuracy depends on the recording. Background noise, overlapping voices, accents, and specialist vocabulary can introduce errors. Click a sentence to replay its audio and edit the wording. Check names and numbers before using or sharing the transcript.

Can I transcribe a video from a link?

Yes. Open our link-to-text tool for a supported video URL, or use the dedicated YouTube or TikTok transcription pages. Use the upload area on this page when the video file is saved on your device.
